Jobs Council Extended for A Second Year

Santa Fe, NM – The Legislative Council has voted to extend the ground-breaking work of the Legislative Jobs Council for a second year.  During the interim, the bipartisan group of Legislators and private industry representatives tackled the immense and complex challenge of creating economic base jobs in New Mexico.  The work of the Legislative Jobs Council is the most thorough and inclusive job creation planning in state history.  Based on this work, specific legislation will be introduced during the 2014 legislative session with the hopes of creating jobs in the next five to seven years if not sooner.  Members of the Jobs Council will hold a press conference to discuss the specific legislation at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in Room 324 at the State Capitol in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

“We’ve spent too much time complaining about the lack of jobs and studying the problem, now it’s time to act,” says Speaker of the House, Ken Martinez (D-Dist 69), who is also the Jobs Council Co-chair. “The Jobs Council has come up with a blueprint that can produce tangible results.  We’re ready to introduce legislation right now and we’ve mapped out the work that needs to be done by the Jobs Council for the next year.”

The Interim Jobs Council estimates that more than 160,000 jobs must be created in the next 10 (ten) years to bring New Mexico back to its 2007 employment levels.  The council also determined which economic sectors could create the most immediate jobs, where in the state they would likely be created, and the obstacles that would impede or prevent their creation.  One of the most significant achievements of the Jobs Council was its focus on collaboration.  Democrats and Republicans, business and labor, state and local organizations all came together to reach a consensus on what the job problem is and how to move the state forward with more immediate results.

The Jobs Council Press Conference will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in Room 324 of the State Capitol.  To call in and hear the Press Conference, dial 1-712-432-3011 Conference Code: 244374
