Thousands of Educators Rally Against Pro-Testing Education Agenda

Thousands of educators rallied in Santa Fe on the last weekend of the Legislative session to oppose Governor Martinez’s pro-testing education agenda.

now… but in kansas adovocates are still hoping for the legalization of marijuana for medical use. the group “kansas for change, inc” sponsored a rally at the state capitol yesterday. organizers say they want to add kansas to the list of states that allow legal access to marijuana with a doctors recommendation. “if you’re concerned about drug use, you and make people be responsible. but putting people in prison and trying to legislate your particular brand of morality is not what the people of kansas have asked for and that’s not what we’re going to stand for.”

the organizers say their main message was: “we support public education… the governor and all state legislators should too.” the two major complaints voiced at the rally were that the state has imposed too much testing on students… and that the state’s new teacher evaluation standards are unfair. the new evaluation rubric bases half a teacher’s score on students’ growth in test scores. teachers say that takes away from classroom time and from helping students grow individually. as teachers we don’t have enough time to look these kids in the eye like we should, and it’s frustrating because we really, really, really want to be helping kids when they’re in trouble

really, really want to be helping kids when they’re in trouble — and right now, the pressure’s too much. at the same time as their rally…governor martinez was in albuquerque announcing details of her education reform plan. in response to the ralliers’ claims… she says p-e-d has actually reduced testing in the past few years and any additional testing days are coming from school districts. she also addressed complaints about teacher pay. she says she’s working with legislators on a plan to give across-the-board raises… right now, the discussion is about how much. i’ll have more on that at 6…back to you.
