With less than a day before polls open in Santa Fe’s municipal elections, Republican women jumped into the fray announcing an endorsement of a Democrat for mayor.
In an email to members, Santa Fe Federated Republican Women Treasurer Elaine Hausman called Bill Dimas, a registered Democrat, “the most conservative of the 3 candidates” and “solidly in favor of conservative values,” labels sure to get picked up and passed around by the campaigns of Democrats Patti Bushee and Javier Gonzales who have both fought hard to claim the votes of the overwhelmingly progressive Santa Fe electorate.
In a poll commissioned by ProgressNow New Mexico late last year, Santa Fe voters supported raising taxes on themselves to maintain a high level of city services and listed endorsements from progressive champion David Coss and environmental organizations like the Sierra Club among those most likely to influence their votes.
Dimas and fellow councilor Bushee later endured criticism from progressives after a measure they introduced to lobby the legislature for mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenders was outed as a policy priority of the conservative corporate legislative “bill mill” ALEC. Bushee later said she did not ultimately support this provision and the language was removed from the city’s final legislative priorities bill.
This year’s mayoral elections has taken some odd turns. Councilor Bill Dimas refused to participate in any public forums or debates, several outside political action committees have been criticized for circumventing the spirit of the city’s public financing system and the city’s largest newspaper, the Santa Fe New Mexican, opted not to issue an endorsement in the race.

Dear SFFRW Members,
If you live in the City of Santa Fe, PLEASE get out and vote on Tuesday. SFFRW is endorsing Bill Dimas for Mayor, as the most conservative of the 3 candidates. I have met and talked with him (and the other candidates), and found him to be not only compassionate, gracious, smart, and friendly, but also solidly in favor of conservative values and business success.
Bill Dimas has a solid reputation for honesty, integrity, fairness, and hard work. Let’s work together to support Bill in his efforts to become Santa Fe’s next mayor.
Please research Mr. Dimas (see links below), and Vote on Tuesday.
