When ProgressNowNM opened our doors three years ago, our goal was clear: empower progressive voices to make New Mexico a better place.
Susana Martinez promised bold change and, for her, that meant letting big business and special interests run the show unchallenged.
Today, we know that we’ve created a conversation and filled a gap that had been open.
Last night, voters rejected partisan gridlock and political sniping. But they voted for candidates with a vision and issues they believe in. Young people stood in line for over an hour to vote for marijuana. Where it was on the ballot, more people voted in support of decriminalizing pot than voted for Susana Martinez.
The election results last night were disappointing, but progressive leaders are headed to Santa Fe as attorney general, state auditor and treasurer. We also sent Tom Udall, Ben Ray Lujan and Michelle Lujan Grisham back to Congress.
We still have Susana Martinez and now she has a Republican-led House of Representatives too.
Our work has never been more important.
ProgressNowNM exists because campaigns come and go. After they pack up their yard signs and walk lists, we’ll still be here fighting for the values we believe in every day of every year, not just during election years.
Change doesn’t happen in one night – not even an election night.
It takes hard work, smart investment and long-term commitment to change.
Thanks for joining us on this journey for the past three years.
The books are closed on this election, but ProgressNowNM’s doors are open.
With your support, we will continue to hold our leaders accountable to the values we all share.
Here’s some really big news: Our campaign for marijuana decriminalization (with our friends at Drug Policy Action) passed overwhelmingly and earned more votes than Susana Martinez in both Santa Fe and Bernalillo County. What next? See our post about that here.
