Will someone please ask Steve Pearce if he believes the Pentagon is about to invade Clovis? And will Susana Martinez follow the lead of Texas’ governor and deploy the National Guard to stop it?
Those are serious questions right-wing conspiracy theorists are asking to Congressmen and governors across the Southwest.
Earlier this month, right-wing “news” outlets worked conspiracy theorists into a frenzy over the ISIS camp they had discovered on the Mexico border. Terrorists based there were set to invade Columbus, New Mexico, reports said, and that prompted alarmist conservatives to press their favorite Congressmen (they are all men) to investigate.
Rep. Steve Pearce, representative of the soon-to-be-invaded district, was questioned about it for a week before his office responded saying he had received a “classified briefing” on the matter and was certain that there were no ISIS terrorists set to invade Columbus, for now.
But that hasn’t stopped conspiracy theorists from naming New Mexico and six other western states as invasion targets in a new Obama-takeover scheme.
If you haven’t heard of Jade Helm 15 that’s probably because you either are 1) not in the US Army or 2) not a nutjob.
But the rumors and misinformation are so bad, elected officials in Texas have been forced to hold public hearings to investigate the invasion plans and prompting new Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to order his National Guard to monitor the US Army’s activities and to report to him any invasion-like activities. Really.
No word on whether Gov. Martinez plans to order New Mexico’s national guard to do the same – or why she won’t.
From the Washington Post:
The mission is vast both geographically and strategically: Elite service members from four branches of the U.S. military will launch an operation this summer in which they will operate covertly among the U.S. public and travel from state to state in military aircraft. Texas, Utah and a section of southern California are labeled as hostile territory, and New Mexico isn’t much friendlier.
That’s the scheme for Jade Helm 15, a new Special Operations exercise that runs from July 15 to Sept. 15. Army Special Operations Command announced it last week, saying the size and scope of the mission sets it apart from many other training exercises…
Several media outlets have noted that the Army has pushed back on the outcry, including Stars & Stripes, Army Times and the Houston Chronicle. But it’s also worth noting that the military has routinely launched exercises in the past in which regions of the United States are identified as hostile for the purpose of training.
So why would US Special Forces invade the Southwestern US? It depends on who you ask. Texas is a target because that is where the most armed patriots are (remember the Alamo!). California? That’s where the communist leaders are clustered.
In case you are looking for signs of the coming invasion, look no further than your local Wal Mart.
Conspiracy theorists point to Wal Mart’s announced closing and upgrading of several supercenters in states also associated with the Army training as evidence of a vast Wal Mart/US Government conspiracy stretching back decades.
In short, it goes like this: the US Government subsidized Wal Mart to lower prices which made us all dependent on them. Now the government is closing them, preventing patriots from buying guns, bullets and daily supplies necessary to fight back against the Army invasion. Get it?
Will someone please ask Steve Pearce if he believes the Pentagon is about to invade Clovis?
But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s CBS News’ take:
