Don’t mess with Texas? More like don’t mess with access!
In a solid 5-3 decision, the Supreme Court today delivered a clear message in support of women being able to access safe and legal abortions and that efforts of state governments to overly regulate that access will not be allowed to stand.
Writing with the majority, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg spelled it out in black and white:
“Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers laws like H.B. 2 that do little or nothing for health, but rather strew impediments to abortion, cannot survive judicial inspection.”
You’ll remember that we covered Justice Ginsburg’s EPIC smackdown of an argument made during the orals that centered around our fair state as being a viable alternative for Texas women to receive abortion care.
In New Mexico, access to reproductive options is a strong value that has been continually targeted by groups from around the state but also from outside groups as well. We here at ProgressNow NM are glad to continue standing with New Mexico families to keep access available for women to make their own decisions about their own healthcare.
There’s inevitably going to be more attempts to limit access in the future. We need to stay vigilante as a community and make sure our legislators are in support of our values both in Santa Fe and in Washington DC.
Even last week there was another attempt to attack abortion providers in New Mexico. A spurious congressional committee has sent a formal request to our state Attorney General for him to investigate certain providers based on completely constructed “evidence” from anti-choice propaganda and lobbyists.
We’re glad to be celebrating with women and families across the country today who know that they are capable of making their own decisions about abortion without government interference. Kudos to SCOTUS and all the people who’ve stood up to protect access across the land.
