Moms Demand Action, New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence and Progress Now NM teamed up to bring a large crowd of gun violence prevention supporters to the round house to lobby for background checks for gun transfers.
Volunteers from around the state showed up in red t-shirts to lobby their legislators with hopes of passing SB 48 and HB 50. They underwent messaging training and were giving petitions signed by fellow supporters then sent to speak with their elected officials.
In the morning the group was joined by bill sponsors Sen. Majority Leader Peter Wirth, Sen. Richard Martinez, Representative Stephanie Garcia Richard, along with advocates, and victims for a press conference in the rotunda. Robin Brule, a victim who on this day one year ago tragically lost her mother to gun violence, spoke passionately about her experience and how important this legislation is for preventing future tragedies.
Both bills passed the house and senate public affairs committees last week and this Friday HB 50 will go before the House Judiciary committee.
