Today: Students, allies plan statewide walkouts & rallies to support Dreamers

UNM’s acting president is encouraging students to walk out of class to support immigrant rights. High schools and community colleges statewide are hosting their own walkouts in solidarity with Dreamers, the children of undocumented immigrants brought here years ago without ever knowing another home.

President Trump is widely expected today to announce his intent to end protections for these children created by President Obama’s DACA program, but with a 6-month delay to allow Congress time to pass a bill making the program permanent.

That option doesn’t sit well with most Dreamers, primarily because there is little confidence that a Republican-led Congress could pass such a law Trump would sign.

More than 800,000 estimated Dreamers would be deported by Trump – 97% of whom are in school or college.

Join one of the marches, walkouts or rallies on your campus today, or join a big rally on Albuquerque’s Civic Plaza today at 4pm.

Walkout at 1:30 pm from NMSU and Doña Ana Community College. Students will walk to the east parking lot near the Pan American Center for a rally at 2 pm.
