Times are changing. Women are finally starting to be heard about sexual harassment – but this is just the beginning and we have more work to do. What we believe to be at the crux of this matter is respect.

In this particular situation, it’s the lack of respect men have for women which has permitted men to believe that sexual misconduct and harassment is just simply part of our culture. This same lack of respect for women is also what has led to decades upon decades of fighting for and protecting abortion.

That is why it is so important that we ensure that we are talking to our friends and family about respecting women because personal decisions about abortion need to remain with New Mexican women, our families, and our medical providers – not the government.

This is no longer a conversation around being pro-choice or anti-choice – this is a conversation that must be rooted in respect. Our communities have a history of respecting our diverse personal and religious beliefs, including differing views about ending a pregnancy.

Women should have medically accurate information about all of their options whether that is to have an abortion, choose adoption, or become a parent.

As a community, we must work to get past the stigma that surrounds abortion. The reality is that at least half of American women will experience an unintended pregnancy by age 45, and about 1 in 3 women will have an abortion by 45.

Since 2010, anti-abortion legislators have quietly passed more than 300 anti-abortion laws. In states across the country, new laws have made it impossible for a woman to access a legal abortion. This is what our culture of silence has created – more barriers for women.

At the end of the day, we can all agree that government should work to ensure that abortion remains safe and legal, but it should not be involved in individual decision-making and its influence should stop at the doctor’s door. A woman deserves to make her own healthcare decisions without interference from the government.

Abortion is one of the safest procedures for a woman in the United States. Less than 0.5% of women obtaining an abortion experience a complication. All healthcare providers, including abortion providers, prioritize patient safety. They follow regulations, licensing requirements, and constantly update training and standards to deliver the highest quality, safe care.

When a woman has decided to have an abortion, she has made the decision that is right for her. Every situation is different, and laws targeting abortion are nothing more than political interference in women’s personal decisions. Decisions about abortion need to remain with a woman and her family.
