[BREAKING] NM’s Attorney General challenges Trump methane rollbacks in court

New Mexico’s Attorney General Hector Balderas joined California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra in taking the Trump administration to court to challenge rollbacks in methane emissions standards. The legal action charges that the move from Trump’s Department of the Interior violates a host of existing regulations and protocols designed to update industry standards that otherwise have operated under decade-old rules. Oil and gas companies vent or flare a significant amount of methane gas during their operations that, besides having negative effects on the environment and New Mexican’s health, wastes a significant amount of a product that otherwise could be utilized to fuel New Mexico homes and other services. The move comes as new polling data in New Mexico shows overwhelming support from a broad swath of the general public for common sense measures designed to limit methane emissions from the oil and gas industry. A new poll conducted by The Majority Institute released this week shows that New Mexicans across the state support strengthening the state’s rules on limiting methane pollution that is leaked, vented or flared from oil and gas facilities.

Speaking Out – Abortion and Harrassment

We are on the precipice of change. We are seeing courageous women come forward and share their personal experiences and it’s catching fire. But there is still so much work to do to ensure that the next generation of New Mexicans has the type of future we all dream of. But, one thing we are certain of is that our stories will continue to be at the root of this change.

Enough is enough – a call to end sexual violence

Our political world is one of explicit and implicit power differentials. We stand together to call an end to a culture that supports men using power and privilege in political environments to harass, intimidate, and sexually violate women and LGTBQ people. Stand with us, sign the petition below.

GOP uses tax plan for a sneak attack on abortion

These past two weeks have been extremely good weeks for progressives in the Land of Enchantment. Last week progressives swept the Las Cruces City Council races, giving progressives a majority on the council. This week the Duke City also had landslide wins for progressives in the runoff elections for mayor and city council. Does this feel a little too good to be true? Not to worry – we’re here to burst that feel good bubble we’ve all been living in and bring us back to the abortion battle Republicans in Congress can’t seem to let go of.

“Progressive-backed candidates win every race in Las Cruces”

Cruceños went to the polls yesterday and rallied behind progressive candidates across the board. Out of three council seats up for grabs, the one vacant seat is being filled by a good progressive, one champion councilor is maintaining his seat, and one progressive challenger managed to unseat the only Republican incumbent in the race. Full voting results can be seen here

Candidates backed by progressives won every race in Tuesday’s Las Cruces municipal election, and the powerful voting bloc expanded its control by ousting the only Republican on the city council… “Las Cruces voters have spoken loudly tonight in favor of continued progress in our community,” said Lucas Herndon of the progressive nonprofit ProgressNow New Mexico.  Read more at nmpolitics.net

In the open District 3 seat, progressive community organizer Gabe Vasquez won 70% of the vote to overwhelmingly defeat a tea party contender (her second time being defeated in this district). ProgressNow New Mexico caught up with Vasquez yesterday while he was talking with voters at one of the city’s voting convenience centers.

Abortion and Respect

There are so many ways that we can talk about abortion – often times, speak about it in the context of protecting the decision making ability of women and the protection of the legality of it. As we approach the end of another week in which Republicans in Congress took another swing at Roe, we thought it would be a good time to remind everyone of what is at the root of what we all fight for – respect. This movement transcends genders, generations, and socioeconomic status, and tied by the notion that respect is a tangible value that everyone deserves. We believe that decisions about abortion and reproductive health are deeply personal and belong between a woman and her medical provider. Government interference in these private medical decisions is unacceptable.
