Tell Senators to VOTE NO on SB 183

[UPDATE: We’re proud to say that due to your efforts, SB 183 has been killed in committee. THANK YOU for your show of support and your testimonies.]

We need you to take action on an abortion bill moving through the Roundhouse TOMORROW. On Tuesday, February 14, the Senate Public Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing on SB 183 that threatens to ban women’s access to a safe and legal abortion later in the pregnancy. Each pregnancy is unique. A woman making the personal and complex decision about abortion later in pregnancy needs access to safe and legal health care without government interference.

Protection for Pregnant Working Women Passes, Moves to Judiciary Committee

A bill that makes it possible for pregnant women to continue to work through their pregnancies to support themselves and their families cleared its first hurdle by passing out of a state House committee last week. The Pregnant Worker Accommodation Bill (HB 179) requires employers to provide “reasonable accommodations to women who are pregnant and must adjust duties that may challenge their health and their pregnancy.” The bill, sponsored by Representatives Gail Chasey (D – Bernalillo), Deborah A. Armstrong (D – Bernalillo), and Joanne Ferrary (D – Doña Ana), sparked a lively debate between House Democrats and Republicans and was supported by impassioned testimonies on both sides of the aisle. The bill now moves on to the House Judiciary Committee. From the New Mexico Political Report:
“We’re trying to alert women and employers that women don’t need to necessarily quit their jobs or stay home if there’s a small accommodation made to keep working,” state Rep. Gail Chasey, D-Albuquerque and sponsor of the legislation, said at the hearing.

3 Bills Aim to Protect Reproductive Rights in New Mexico

[UPDATE: SB 282 Passed in the House Judiciary Committee, March 10! Now it moves on the the Governor’s desk.]

Respect New Mexico Women, a coalition of local organizations committed to supporting women’s health care access launched their reproductive agenda this week with a trio of legislative bills that expand the reproductive rights of women in our state, where New Mexicans remain unapologetically in favor of a woman’s right to access all forms of healthcare, including abortion. This is not necessarily true across the nation, where supporters, activists and healthcare providers face the possibility of dangerous rollbacks in legislation. Committees are reviewing at least forty-six anti-abortion bills in 14 states that challenge access to reproductive health including the right to a legal and safe abortion. With the appointment of religious zealot Betsy DeVos, whose family money has “funded crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs)” that lie to patients about pregnancy, abortion, and other health concerns,” women’s health may soon find itself in limbo, but not yet.

Respect New Mexico Women Launches Campaign that Champions Reproductive Legislation

“We’re going to ensure that regardless of what they do federally, in New Mexico we take care of women and families and let them choose what’s best for them in deciding if and when and how often to have children.” — Rep. Deborah Armstrong, D-Albuquerque

Respect New Mexico Women, a coalition of organizations, supporters, and healthcare providers launched their 2017 legislative campaign today at the NM State Capitol. In a packed meeting room, the Respect Campaign described three bills the coalition will introduce in committee during the 2017 New Mexico Legislative Session. The bills are designed to protect and expand legislation that safeguards reproductive healthcare for women. Read about the Respect Campaign Press Conference at NM Political Report.

State Republicans try to BAN ABORTION, again. RESIST!

[UPDATE:]
HB 37 has been SCHEDULED TO BE HEARD IN COMMITTEE ON THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2017
We need to show our strength in numbers. We need your help. HB 37 or the Born Alive Bill aims to make the act of a late-term abortion a second-degree felony, no matter the circumstance, or whether or not the pregnancy endangers the mother. This bill has made the rounds before and has been voted down in committee, year after year. However, the Trump-Pence Administration is empowering more radical voices to assert dangerous policies like the Born Alive Bill, with new vigor. Their pro-life platform is far reaching and has already begun to reduce access to abortion with the ultimate goal to make all abortions illegal. Now HB 37 is back with five sponsors this year.

Roe v. Wade Celebration to be held at NM Capitol Rotunda

The Santa Fe chapter of NOW (National Organization for Women) rides the momentum of the Women’s March on Washington by hosting a celebration of Roe v. Wade decision in the NM Capitol Rotunda. On Tuesday, February 7 from 10am -11am supporters of a woman’s right to decide her reproductive health will gather to honor the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling. The January 22, 1973 United States Supreme Court ruling that ensures a woman’s right to obtain a safe and legal abortion from a health care provider is under threat like never before, in state houses across the national and in Washington. Within the first week of his tenure, the 45th President of the United States has threatened Planned Parenthood with defunding. He also waved his pen and reinstated the Global Gag Rule that blocks U.S. aid to international organizations that perform or even talk about abortion.

Silver City Printmaker’s Viral Message Raises $70,000 for Planned Parenthood

Kyle Durrie, a printmaker based in Silver City had a simple idea over the holiday break while doodling in her notebook: create a tote bag with text in the vein of a souvenir you might get while on a trip: I went on vacation and all I got what this t-shirt . . . before the ink could dry on her prototype, Durrie’s idea went viral. By the first day of the New Year, she was inundated with orders. So far her totebag project has raised $70,000 for Planned Parenthood.

Digital Snake Oil: How to Spot Fake News About Abortion

Propaganda. Hoaxes. Misinformation. Fake news is so big you can see it from space. The industry is not new – satirical writing is the bedrock of modern Western civilization – but without a cheat sheet (see below), it’s difficult to discern fact from fiction.

Did President Obama Just Save Planned Parenthood from Donald Trump?

President Barack Obama, in his final days in the White House, isn’t running down the clock like it’s the last week of school before summer vacation. Over the holiday break, the Obama Administration proposed a new rule that prevents states from defunding Planned Parenthood, or any other family planning provider, and it is sheer genius. Under the rule, states can no longer vote to defund Planned Parenthood simply because some of its clinics offer abortion services. According to the Huffington Post:
The new rule, which the Department of Health and Human Services proposed last week, says that states cannot withhold Title X federal family planning money from certain recipients for any reason other than the provider’s “ability to deliver services to program beneficiaries in an effective manner.” That means states can no longer vote to defund Planned Parenthood because some of its clinics offer abortion services. The Obama Administration may be in the throes of making its transition, but President Obama still has real work to do to ensure not all of his progressive choices and policies get rolled back by Trump and his cronies.
