For Dems, Lt. Governor race is still a toss-up, but GOP and Libs are locked in

ProgressNow New Mexico will be looking at some top-level races more in-depth over the next few weeks to bring our perspective to the key races we’re expecting to see in New Mexico this year. New Mexico is in the national spotlight as one of the “most likely to flip” states in terms of our governor’s race. Our series will focus on the offices that New Mexicans can vote for statewide. This is the third piece in our series. The position of Lt. Governor can seem pretty inglorious compared to other statewide positions with specific duties as Secretary of State or Attorney General.

Abortion and what we learned from Alabama

Last Tuesday evening’s election outcome created a sigh of relief felt around the nation, but it also was a wake-up call. A state in our union came within a 1.5% margin of electing a known racist, misogynist, and possible sexual predator because he supports abortion.
For some Alabama voters, supporting abortion rights may be a sin worse than some of the sexual misdeeds Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore has been accused of — allegations Moore has denied. That’s the conundrum facing the state’s conservative, deeply religious electorate: Embrace Democrat Doug Jones despite his liberal stance on abortion and other social issues or vote for Moore anyway even if they believe there is some truth to the sexual assault allegations against him. “The abortion issue alone is enough to buy [Moore] a win,” predicted Brent Buchanan, an Alabama GOP pollster and consultant.

GOP uses tax plan for a sneak attack on abortion

These past two weeks have been extremely good weeks for progressives in the Land of Enchantment. Last week progressives swept the Las Cruces City Council races, giving progressives a majority on the council. This week the Duke City also had landslide wins for progressives in the runoff elections for mayor and city council. Does this feel a little too good to be true? Not to worry – we’re here to burst that feel good bubble we’ve all been living in and bring us back to the abortion battle Republicans in Congress can’t seem to let go of.

[TAKE ACTION] Dona Ana County Republican Chair has history of unacceptable behavior, ties to ICE. Sign the petition to have him removed

A day after a racist-laden post about recent events in Charlottesville landed Dona Ana Republican Party Chairman Roman Jimenez in hot water, ProgressNow New Mexico has delved deep into the Jimenez’ history on Facebook and discovered more egregious content ranging from advocating for rape to condemning all drug users to death.

Fox News compares Gov. Martinez to “lightweights” like Dan Quayle, Spiro Agnew, Sarah Palin

“What do these politicians have in common? Spiro Agnew, Dan Quayle and Sarah Palin? They are all Republicans who got nominated for vice president even though party elites regarded them as lightweights,” Sabato said. Speculation about Gov. Martinez’s national ambitions are heating up again on the heels of a new report from the Santa Fe New Mexican that shows the governor spent almost $30,000 in taxpayer funded travel to take her security detail and staff to national Republican events. Fox News’ analysts are following that lead by speculating that the governor’s reluctance to publicly endorse a candidate for the GOP presidential nomination is leaving her open to consideration as a VP pick for them all.

[AUDIO]: National Republican Calls Reporter a “Dumb F*ck,” Angry Over Being Forced to Resign for Racist Comments
ALBUQUERQUE – The Santa Fe Reporter has just released an audio recording and transcripts of embattled National Republican Committeeman and former Modrall Sperling attorney Pat Rogers verbally berating one of their reporters. Rodgers, apparently angry over ProgressNow New Mexico’s actions last year that exposed his now-infamous statement that Republican Governor Susana Martinez “dishonored” Colonel George Custer’s memory by meeting with tribal leaders, was caught on tape calling Santa Fe Reporter journalist Justin Horwath a “dumb f*ck.”

Audio and additional excerpts from the conversation are here. Additionally, Rogers threatens litigation during a later exchange with the Santa Fe Reporter but revealed that he “hasn’t decided yet” who would be the target of such legal action. During the firestorm of media attention surrounding Rogers’ comments last year that led to his resignation from the Modrall Sperling law firm, ProgressNow New Mexico and a diverse array of Native, Hispanic, and LGBT communities called for Rodgers to step down from his national Republican post. As the face of the New Mexican Republican Party, Rogers represents New Mexico on a national stage and his actions reflect back on the state as a whole.
