It’s no secret Congressman Steve Pearce gets a lot wrong — from immigration to land rights and everything in between. But when it comes to women’s reproductive health his alternative facts are in another league. Here are 5 things he just doesn’t understand about Planned Parenthood and the reproductive rights of all New Mexicans.
Everyone but the far-right radicals who used these recordings to initiate spurious investigations into abortion providers knew the videos were doctored to falsely portray the doctors and staff of these Planned Parenthood clinics. Now, the legal system is vindicating those facts.
One of three Draconian abortion bills was heard in the Roundhouse today and was precipitously and successfully struck down. The Forced Medical Intervention Act, otherwise known by the pro-life, radical right as the “Born Alive Bill,” was tabled the House Consumer and Public Affairs committee after a marathon hearing full of voices of doctors and women supporting their own right to make their own health care decisions. This misleading bill that would compromise the health and welfare of patients and would criminalize the work of medical providers. Similar bills had been introduced in previous sessions where sponsors made last-minute attempts to revive them from committees in the final days of the session. Did you know?
Three abortion access bills will be heard in the Roundhouse this Thursday that threaten the reproductive choices of New Mexico women, their privacy, a woman’s right to decide — and there’s something you can do about it.
[UPDATE: HB 284 is scheduled to go before the House Judiciary Committee on Monday, February 27 at 1:30pm.]
You called, emailed your legislator, and you showed up in big numbers today and you helped DEFEAT an archaic bill. We thank you! But New Mexico women STILL need your support! On Wednesday morning at the Roundhouse, should HB 284 move forward in the House Health and Human Services Committee hearing, women across the state will advance the cause of consistent and reliable access to birth control. Eliminating the need to visit a pharmacy every 30 or 90 days to refill prescriptions, will reduce the chance of an unintended pregnancy.
The Santa Fe chapter of NOW (National Organization for Women) rides the momentum of the Women’s March on Washington by hosting a celebration of Roe v. Wade decision in the NM Capitol Rotunda. On Tuesday, February 7 from 10am -11am supporters of a woman’s right to decide her reproductive health will gather to honor the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling. The January 22, 1973 United States Supreme Court ruling that ensures a woman’s right to obtain a safe and legal abortion from a health care provider is under threat like never before, in state houses across the national and in Washington. Within the first week of his tenure, the 45th President of the United States has threatened Planned Parenthood with defunding. He also waved his pen and reinstated the Global Gag Rule that blocks U.S. aid to international organizations that perform or even talk about abortion.
Kyle Durrie, a printmaker based in Silver City had a simple idea over the holiday break while doodling in her notebook: create a tote bag with text in the vein of a souvenir you might get while on a trip: I went on vacation and all I got what this t-shirt . . . before the ink could dry on her prototype, Durrie’s idea went viral. By the first day of the New Year, she was inundated with orders. So far her totebag project has raised $70,000 for Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood inches ever closer to being defunded as part of the GOP’s gleeful plan to dismantle Medicare, Medicaid, and gut the Affordable Care Act. As soon as President-elect Trump takes office, 40% of Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer-funded budget could vanish, leaving hundreds of thousands of women without health care (or access to a safe, legal abortion). Women aren’t the only ones at risk. There are health concerns that impact men only – Planned Parenthood provides services for them as well. Men are also at risk when it comes to the loss of Planned Parenthood funding.
President Barack Obama, in his final days in the White House, isn’t running down the clock like it’s the last week of school before summer vacation. Over the holiday break, the Obama Administration proposed a new rule that prevents states from defunding Planned Parenthood, or any other family planning provider, and it is sheer genius. Under the rule, states can no longer vote to defund Planned Parenthood simply because some of its clinics offer abortion services. According to the Huffington Post:
The new rule, which the Department of Health and Human Services proposed last week, says that states cannot withhold Title X federal family planning money from certain recipients for any reason other than the provider’s “ability to deliver services to program beneficiaries in an effective manner.” That means states can no longer vote to defund Planned Parenthood because some of its clinics offer abortion services. The Obama Administration may be in the throes of making its transition, but President Obama still has real work to do to ensure not all of his progressive choices and policies get rolled back by Trump and his cronies.
We knew it wouldn’t take long for anti-choice zealots everywhere to start working to dismantle women’s access to healthcare under the new federal administration. Across the country, there have been reports of emboldened conservative groups rushing to pass repressive legislation. This week a national anti-choice group called Operation Rescue sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office “urging him to extend the Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives into the next Congressional session.”
This was directly targeted at New Mexico. Earlier this year a house select committee, headed by arch-conservative Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tn), sent New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas a request to investigate clinics in New Mexico. (You’ll remember that Blackburn is that congresswoman from Tennessee that deals in right-wing conspiracies and shares a penchant with some New Mexico republicans for not disclosing her campaign finances.)
Discredited and denounced local anti-choice group Protest Albuquerque has immediately started spreading the word to their small group of supporters through their website and in newsletters, claiming that they’ll be staging “strategic protests” directed at the AG’s office.
