#4 – Top 5 Martinez blunders as we approach another legislative session

This one hits particularly close to home, as our state’s young people are the root of the positive changes we should expect and hope for in the state we love. In September of last year, while legislators again tried to incorporate Next Generation Science Standards to improve educational outcomes for students across the state, the Governor released her own version of the standards, ignoring common sense, national education best practices, and the will of educators and parents in every corner of New Mexico.

Abortion and what we learned from Alabama

Last Tuesday evening’s election outcome created a sigh of relief felt around the nation, but it also was a wake-up call. A state in our union came within a 1.5% margin of electing a known racist, misogynist, and possible sexual predator because he supports abortion.
For some Alabama voters, supporting abortion rights may be a sin worse than some of the sexual misdeeds Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore has been accused of — allegations Moore has denied. That’s the conundrum facing the state’s conservative, deeply religious electorate: Embrace Democrat Doug Jones despite his liberal stance on abortion and other social issues or vote for Moore anyway even if they believe there is some truth to the sexual assault allegations against him. “The abortion issue alone is enough to buy [Moore] a win,” predicted Brent Buchanan, an Alabama GOP pollster and consultant.

Abortion and Respect

There are so many ways that we can talk about abortion – often times, speak about it in the context of protecting the decision making ability of women and the protection of the legality of it. As we approach the end of another week in which Republicans in Congress took another swing at Roe, we thought it would be a good time to remind everyone of what is at the root of what we all fight for – respect. This movement transcends genders, generations, and socioeconomic status, and tied by the notion that respect is a tangible value that everyone deserves. We believe that decisions about abortion and reproductive health are deeply personal and belong between a woman and her medical provider. Government interference in these private medical decisions is unacceptable.

I Am Still In – Stand with 194 Countries and Resist President Trump

On June 1st, President Trump announced the United States would withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change. This decision threatens our security, our public health and welfare, our economic prosperity, and our clean energy industry, which supports millions of U.S. jobs. It threatens the air we breathe and the water we drink. It threatens our ecosystems and disproportionately affects the most vulnerable people on our planet. Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement does not represent the will of the American people.
