Three abortion access bills will be heard in the Roundhouse this Thursday that threaten the reproductive choices of New Mexico women, their privacy, a woman’s right to decide — and there’s something you can do about it.
On Thursday afternoon the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee will hear three bills that could drastically reduce access to health care for New Mexico women.
HB 37 — The Forced Medical Intervention Act, otherwise known by the pro-life, radical right as the “Born Alive Bill,” blocks women, their families, and their healthcare providers from making personalized medical decisions in the best, and worst of times. The Republican sponsors of this legislation claim the bill will stop medical professionals from denying or depriving infants medical care. The truth is, this bill interferes with doctors’ high standards of patient care, makes it a criminal act to assist women when their pregnancies take a tragic turn, and bullies providers into giving “one-size-fits-all” care to women who deserve compassionate treatment.
HB 37 aims to make the act of a late–term abortion a second-degree felony, no matter the circumstance, or whether or not the pregnancy endangers the mother. This bill has made the rounds before and has been voted down in committee, year after year. However, the Trump-Pence Administration is empowering more radical voices to assert dangerous policies like the Born Alive Bill, with new vigor. Their pro-life platform is far reaching and has already begun to reduce access to abortion with the ultimate goal to make all abortions illegal. Now HB 37 is back with five sponsors this year. We must not take for granted the absurdity of this bill. We are living in extraordinary times that can only be described as not normal. We know that bills like HB 37 are meant to mislead the public deteriorate a woman’s right and ban abortion altogether.
HB 220 – The Pro-life bill, that according to the NM Political Report was tabled in a Senate Hearing earlier this month is back as House Bill 220. Known as the Partial and Late-Term Abortion Bill, would BAN and criminalize abortions later in a pregnancy under any and every circumstance, whether the life of the mother is in danger, or the fetus is no longer viable. This bill was tabled in a Senate Hearing earlier in the month Any woman who finds herself in the position to need a late-term abortion is already facing a tragic situation, made even more unthinkable with callus, governmental interference. Every pregnancy is a complex and personal event, and the loss of access to 20-week abortion hurts women.
HB 221 — The Forced Parental Notification Bill punishes young families and denies them the right to make decisions about their reproduction choices with their health care provider. This bill is highly unnecessary as many young people DO tell their parents and guardians about their health care plans. HB 221 will stigmatize abortion and shame young women who have made the decision to have one.
This triad of abortion bills represents a formidable foe, but not one we can’t handle.
With your support and presence on Thursday, we will be able to face these absurd attacks on a woman’s right to make a choice about her reproductive health.
