Yesterday in Clovis, a 17-year old student chose guns and violence to bring attention to his problems. 6 people were injured, two lost their lives – and absolutely none of it makes sense. Like so many others across New Mexico and the country, we extend our thoughts and condolences to those who lost loved ones and to survivors and first responders who escaped.
In every legislative session since Sandy Hook, ProgressNow New Mexico has helped our partners like Everytown for Gun Safety, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Moms Demand Action-NM and New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence to advocate for gun sense legislation like background checks, locking up weapons at home and sharing mental health records with our courts.
We pointed out that 87% of New Mexicans support common sense gun laws and want to see changes made at the state level. But, every year NRA-backed legislators and lobbyists stop that progress cold. And every year another shooting happens.
Some disturbing stats from Everytown for Gun Safety:
- 966 New Mexicans were shot and killed in the past decade.
- From 2000-2011, New Mexico had the highest rate of any state of law enforcement officers killed with a handgun that was not their own — over four times the national average.
- In New Mexico alone, the background check system has blocked at least 26,424 gun sales to prohibited people since 1998, including 13,651 to felons, 5,709 to fugitives from justice, and 3,374 to people convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors or subject to domestic violence protection orders.
New Mexicans are tired of these tragic headlines and it’s time to take action.
Common sense gun laws like background checks for every gun sales are just common sense, and they make our schools, our police officers and our families safer.
With this week’s news out of Clovis, legislators are talking about this right now. Send them a message that we want them to do this NOW.
