On January 9, 2018, from Noon until 2p.m., ProgressNow NM is hosting a reception for artist Denise Weaver Ross. Her artwork is featured in the “From the Heart” show in their offices located at 625 Silver Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
This selection draws from Denise’s House of Cards series, which reimagines a deck of cards in large-scale works on paper. Weaver Ross spent three years creating the vibrantly colored images: 52 cards plus four jokers/wildcards. The 26 x 40-inch images layer cultural, political, historical and mystical references. In 2016, Denise won “Best-in-Show” in the Las Vegas International Juried Art Competition at Jana’s RedRoom in the renowned Arts Factory, which resulted in a one-person show in the same gallery in 2017.
Many of the artworks in “From the Heart” show draw from the health struggles, which have affected her family. The artist’s late husband, Colin Ross, died at 39 from complications of the Sickle Cell disease. Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes severe pain episodes and a shortened lifespan, as referenced in the King of Pain and the Sickle Moon as well as in the Sickle of Leo, while Ace of My Heart relates directly with her oldest son’s struggles with Type I diabetes.
Denise Weaver Ross is an artist, poet, and graphic designer, who has lived and worked in Albuquerque since 1996. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1982 and has exhibited in galleries and museums along the East Coast, Chicago, and the Southwest.
She is also a published poet, she has produced five books of art and poetry. Her art and poetry have also been included in art and literary magazines as well as anthologies in the United States, the United Kingdom, and India.
