The legislative session is upon us and State Representative Joanne Ferrary’s Keep Abortion Safe and Legal Bill will be one of the most watched bills in New Mexico and nationwide. The fight continues to protect women’s access to reproductive healthcare and passing this bill would be a significant step forward in this effort. We recognize that change takes a movement, a movement built from the ground up by people like YOU! ProgressNow New Mexico is bringing you a multimedia series of covering the hard work done by partners across the state helping in this fight.
Why are we doing this?
One, New Mexican women and families deserve to have the most accurate information about providers and reproductive healthcare options. New Mexico has historically been at the center of detrimental health policies by which women, and women of color in particular, have been directly impacted by lack of care and intentional control of their fertility (read: Indian Health Services targeting and sterilizing “full blooded” Native peoples). We will share this and more; this series will also provide specific information to look for when seeking care and avoiding organizations that are manipulative and attempt to misinform women and families about their medical options.
Two, we believe we must permanently protect access to reproductive health care. We are working in solidarity with several other New Mexico based organizations to repeal out-of-date anti-abortion language in the criminal code of New Mexico by encouraging Legislators and the Governor to pass the Keep Abortion Safe and Legal legislation – HB 51.
What to look for in the weeks ahead
You can count on ProgressNow New Mexico to bring you what’s happening in reproductive healthcare policies as well as the history of access to care; anti-choice “who’s who” and how they target Albuquerque and the state at large (anti-choice billboards in the South Valley and on busses, and paying low income women to get birth control); and a printable handout that will help you know the difference between a Crisis Pregnancy Center and a legitimate clinic.
