Women’s History Month- NM Edition

Every week this month, we will highlight a few women across New Mexico who kick ass, take names, and show up for their communities! This week, we want to highlight Congresswoman Debra Haaland and Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-28)! Check out our landing page for Women of New Mexico!

Congresswoman Deb Haaland is one of two Native American women ever elected to Congress. She is the daughter of veterans and raised her daughter as a single mother. Before being elected to Congress, she ran for Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico and was the Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.

Through her office, she has brought to light Indigenous issues that are not always talked about in the media like the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and access to clean water.
Representative Stansbury ran against Jimmie Hall who was a seven-term representative in 2018. She was part of wave of women who ran on progressive platforms and won. Melanie has extensive experience in budgeting and in sciences. Her time in the Roundhouse has not gone unnoticed- she’s gone toe-to-toe with veteran legislators, leading discussions on the House floor with love and compassion for our State.
