Sine die is upon us. It’s a fancy way of saying the end of the 2019 Legislative Session is almost here. In the last five days of the session, there are still a lot of bills that have not had a hearing in one chamber or in the next committee. Let’s break it down for you:
HB 51- Keep Abortion Safe and Legal
The repeal of a pre- Roe v. Wade law that would criminalize healthcare providers and patients seeking abortions passed Senate Judiciary on Monday and is on the Senate Floor calendar. We must tell the Senate to prioritize healthcare! On Saturday, March 9, Respect NM Women held a rally at the Roundhouse to tell the Senate just that- champion New Mexico families by protecting health care and keeping a necessary part of reproductive health safe and legal. Abortion is not a crime.
SB 136/HB 291- Efficient Use of Energy
These are mirrored bills and they establish thresholds for energy efficiency programs which, at minimum, save 5% of energy costs to customers. The bills also provide for the removal of regulatory disincentives to energy efficiency programs. SB 136 has passed the Senate and is now in House Government. HB 291 has passed through the House and is now in Senate Corporations.
