The campaign of State Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard (D- Los Alamos, Jemez) is crying foul after a Republican PAC misreported changed her voting record to attack her in ads to her voters.

This press release from her campaign:

For Immediate Release: Advance NM Now PAC Caught Lying To Voters

Backstory: On October 15, 2014, voters throughout House District 43 received a mailer from Advance New Mexico Now PAC, a political action committee headed by Matt Chandler and primarily funded by the Republican State Leadership Committee. The mailer, attached in this release, claims that Representative Stephanie Garcia voted in favor of SB 294 in 2013. SB 294, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, would have allowed some criminal records to be expunged after a hearing before a district judge. SB 294 passed on a 40-26 vote and contrary to the mailer, Representative Stephanie Garcia Richard broke party rank and voted against the measure. The bill was eventually vetoed by Governor Martinez but now Advance New Mexico Now PAC is trying to distort the facts and insinuate that Rep. Garcia Richard’s falsified ‘yes’ vote would have endangered the lives of children in daycare.

Check the Facts:

– In 2013, during the final House vote on SB 294, Representative Garcia Richard voted AGAINST Senate Bill 294. Click here to see the actual vote online.

– Since the 2014 elections began, Advance New Mexico Now PAC has mailed four fabricated mail pieces against Rep. Garcia Richard and four positive pieces for the Republican opponent, Geoff Rodgers. (All mail pieces are available upon request)

Statement from Representative Stephanie Garcia Richard: “After a string of fraudulent mailers and yesterday’s utterly false attack against a vote I didn’t even make, Advance New Mexico Now PAC has clearly illustrated their disregard for the facts and the depths with which they will deceive to sway an election. The truth is that I voted against the bill cited in the mailer and Advance New Mexico PAC and my opponent have repeatedly distorted the facts instead of focusing on real solutions to solve New Mexico’s problems.

I am proud of my voting record and the work I have done to advance our public education system and protect small businesses and children. It’s not the voting record of a Democrat or a Republican but an independent voice that represents the interests of this unique district.”
