GOP uses tax plan for a sneak attack on abortion

These past two weeks have been extremely good weeks for progressives in the Land of Enchantment. Last week progressives swept the Las Cruces City Council races, giving progressives a majority on the council. This week the Duke City also had landslide wins for progressives in the runoff elections for mayor and city council. Does this feel a little too good to be true? Not to worry – we’re here to burst that feel good bubble we’ve all been living in and bring us back to the abortion battle Republicans in Congress can’t seem to let go of.

Abortion and Respect

There are so many ways that we can talk about abortion – often times, speak about it in the context of protecting the decision making ability of women and the protection of the legality of it. As we approach the end of another week in which Republicans in Congress took another swing at Roe, we thought it would be a good time to remind everyone of what is at the root of what we all fight for – respect. This movement transcends genders, generations, and socioeconomic status, and tied by the notion that respect is a tangible value that everyone deserves. We believe that decisions about abortion and reproductive health are deeply personal and belong between a woman and her medical provider. Government interference in these private medical decisions is unacceptable.

Republicans attack abortion… again

As New Mexicans, we understand the value of respect – which is why we respect women to make their own decisions. Personal decisions about abortion need to remain with New Mexican women, their families, and their medical providers.

VICTORY: All Three Anti-Abortion Bills Tabled in the Roundhouse

The three anti-abortion bills we told you were headed to the Roundhouse last week have been all but defeated, thanks to your swift action, true testimonies, and declarations of support for New Mexico women and their families.

HB 37 (“Born Alive), HB 220 (20-week Abortion Ban) and HB 221 (Abortion by Parental Consent) have all be tabled for the 2017 New Mexico Legislative Session, ensuring that the reproductive choices of New Mexico women, their privacy, a woman’s right to decide will remain intact until they are again challenged by the religious right, and they will be. Here’s a short summary of how things unfolded this week:

HB 37, the Forced Medical Intervention Act, otherwise known by the pro-life, radical right as the “Born Alive Bill,” would have blocked women, their families, and their healthcare providers from making personalized medical decisions. This bill was tabled in the Judiciary House & Human Affairs committee on Thursday, March 2 in the afternoon having been postponed and rescheduled twice. After grueling 6+ hours of testimony, the bill was defeated, also causing the other two bills that were planned to be heard in the same committee to roll over to the next available date.
