Congress makes the law, the Executive Branch enforces the law, and the Courts interpret the law and protect our essential rights and freedoms as citizens.
These three separate but equal branches of government are foundational to our democracy and they create the checks and balances that govern our daily lives.
There’s a reason for that: America’s founding fathers sought to create a representative government in contrast to what they saw as the tyranny of King George/England.
Nowhere in the constitution does it say “we shall be ruled by a king and his wealthy lords.”
Trump’s behavior over the last few weeks makes it clear that if we let him, he will rule as king with Musk by his side, and with the support of billionaires like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Murdoch.
Together, Trump and Musk have enacted the cruel and dangerous Project 2025 by attempting to freeze trillions in government spending, stop Medicare payments, destabilize grants for nonprofits, fire Inspector Generals, enact mass deportation, and gut USAID, OPM, CFPB and other key agencies established by congress with broad support from the American people.
They have done all of this via king’s decree (aka executive order) or even worse, as Musk did at the US Treasury until a court injunction kicked in, by simply taking the sensitive data and personal information of every single American and risking a global financial meltdown.
When Musk, Trump, JD Vance and their MAGA / Project 2025 leaders say they are creating a “second American Revolution” and that courts and congress aren’t allowed to check the executive branch, they are challenging the American people, saying “we are kings, you must bow down.”
As Mike Brock pointed out in an article for TechDirt, this power grab is both illegal and it threatens the very nature of our democracy, rule of law, and market economy.
Benjamin Franklin’s famous exchange comes to mind. When he left the Constitutional Convention, Franklin was asked by a crowd of citizens what type of government the delegates had created, to which he responded “A republic, if you can keep it.”
We should not mistake the moment we are in…
Every American must now consider this question: will we accept a king with unchecked power or demand a democracy of, by, and for the people?
It is an open question and one that requires us to act quickly and forcefully, both in the halls of power and in the streets. We will not be able to post our way out of fascism.
Call To Action: New Mexico’s congressional representatives are already hard at work on this (for example, Rep. Melanie Stansbury’s Nobody Elected Elon Musk Act).
Instead, send the 5 Calls website/app to 5 friends in key states (see below), and ask them to pressure their elected representatives to stop the Musk and Trump’s power grab. No experience needed – there are call scripts that make it easy.
